I have going over
some of my old work, and got caught up in nostalgia about the times when
my hands were happily smeared with clay. Let me share with you a few of
my ceramic stoneware and raku works from not so long ago. |

Hi
Sassy! Bonjour from Paris! We had a successful book signing and reading
for the forest book last night at the Shakespeare and Company bookshop.
So many Pinoys came. Ang saya! Here are the photo captions you need: The lady in the portrait is Antonia Roces Prieto, sister of Lolo Chino. Her mom was a Pardo. Her husband was Bibilo Legarda Prieto. The family in the second photo you sent is the family of Antonia Roces-Prieto. STANDING from left to right: Alex Prieto, Gilbert Teodoro (husband of Nikki Prieto Teodoro), Marco Prieto Delgado, Benny Prieto, Mauro Prieto, Paolo Prieto, Benny de Leon (husband of Bettina Prieto de Leon). SEATED on chairs, left to right: Peachy Prieto, Marixi Prieto, Bettina Prieto-de Leon, Antonia "Chucha" Roces Prieto with grandson Anito on her lap, Dingot Conde-Prieto, Bianca Prieto-Santos, Karla Prieto-Delgado. SEATED on ground: Nico Prieto-Siles, Nikki Prieto-Teodoro, Jane Prieto. The other family is the family of Ding Roces. I know Mina but to be sure, you better ask Tita Sylvia Roces Montilla to help you identify everyone. Do you have her contact details? Hope this finds you well.! Karla |

Dear Sassy, Sorry I have not been more attentive to your requests. I have been swamped with work these past days and am still swamped...it never ends! I visited the site and found some errors in my quotes. I will tell you more specifically in another e-mail but in the meantime, if you wanted me to identify those people in the three pictures, the only one I can name is Sylvia R. Montilla and Alfredo Roces. I can't even remember the name of Tito Ding's wife. I don't really know his children. Ever since they've moved to Australia I hardly see them. Sorry! I hope things are going okay with you. How long are you supposed to be doing this project/thesis? Keep in touch. Take care, Cookie |

Sassymae,
Sorry I could get to you sooner, working on something here. Here is the
data you want. Date of opening of exhibit at Crucible Gallery was October
2, 2001. Those in photo are: 1. Sassymae, Ding, Susan Fetelvejo Roces (artist,
married to JJ Roces, son of my brother Chito) Seb Garcia (businessman) 2.
Ding, Sylvia Roces Montilla (editor Village Voice, daughter of Liling) 3.
Leonor Varona Montinola (widow of Liling Roces), Irene Pineda Roces (Ding's
wife), Ding and Sylvia Roces Montilla (daughter of Liling). By the way, my daughter Mina who is not a journalist but a historian (phd. Michigan University), recently published a book there in Manila (De La Salle University, your alma mater) entitled: Kinship Power and Politics. It is on the Lopez family so you might find that interesting. Revisited the site and left a message in the guest book. Parang masyadong mahaba ang text ng interviews, I think you should break them up into more paragraphs as breathing space. But it's looking better. Regards Ding |

Dear
Sassymae, Have just revisited your Roces site and it has expanded tremendously.
The transcribed taped interviews are long reads. I suggest you break the
text up into many paragraphs as breathing space, and when feasible edit
some of it for readability.Time for more photos also, I think. Estong Nievera
could provide archival material. Maybe sample pages of Manila Times, La
Vanguardia etc.? Sample columns? Just suggestions. Its growing and needs
aesthetic attention. Its
a monumental task. Great job. Cheers Ding |

Perhaps I did not know how to separate the brown devices framing the photos in /chinophotos so I could view them in large enough size to identify the people involved. The history of the Philippine press is very sketchy. Its author evidently had not read Carson Taylor's small but well researched book on the newspapers of the American era 1898-1935, notes on Japanese occupation newspapers in THE PHILIPPINES UNDER JAPAN, etc. or examined the BULLETIN OF THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL COLLECTION for comments on the post-liberation Manila press and its operators, including some in my 1945-1948 personal diaries. I admire the Roces family too much to be satisfied with a quick brush-off. Jim |

Thank
you for providing these materials on the Roces family and Philippine journalism.
I am disappointed in their quality. Jim |

Hi Sassy, The best person that can help answer most of your question is my uncle Marquitos Roces who also lives here in Wack-Wack. I can't give you his telephone number right now because I don't have it right now but I will see if I can get it. As far as the history of WHC and my other publications, I myself will have to do a bit of sleuthing because it did not start with me (us). We bought the magazine in the early 70's. I'll try and give you as much information as I can. I have been very busy and stressed out with all the different things going on in my offices. Seems like this is a time for change and assesment. Too many things going on. I'll try my best to find time for your questions. Take care, Cookie |

Ding Roces sent me the reference to your work. My family knew the Roces' from the 1920s when they vacationed in Baguio. As a small boy I was impressed by a female member who survived being struck by lightning when she opened her umbrella atop Mt. Santo Tomas. I knew Chino from 1945, when the Associated Press established its office in the same building, until I left the Philippines in August 1948 to attend the School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC. He struck me as a brilliant mind with great curiosity. He returned from a trip with the first wire recorder I had ever seen. It had been copied from the German invention and was the ancestor of the tape recorder. He hired my boss, John Grover, to edit the Manila Evening News. My annotated diaries for that period appeared in the Bulletin of the American Historical Collection. Copies are available at its library, hosted by the Ateneo de Manila's Rizal Library. |

I got the site of Roces from Ding Roces from Australia. He is on vacation now, he might be in Manila. That was a nice writeup and complete. I joined the Times in 1951 after my return from the US where I served with the US army Transport Service for 5 years. I working for PANA ( original of Asia Magazine ) and TIME-Life Magazines covering the Huk Fightings. The grandson of Don Ramon, Wahoo Guerreo married to Helena an native of Spain where he lived there for many years. I am glad to hear about Eddie with Channel 5 and I dont know what Joaquinito is doing now. The Manila Times was the Number One then. And famous people worked there before like Ninoy Aquino, Max Soliven, Joe Guevarra nd the late Doroy Valencia. So is Sen. Ople, Former Exec.Sec J Tuvera. I am retired now after working NY City as a Catalog Photographer for the Big Stores like, Sears, JC Penney and others.I got a job right away upon immigrating here in 78. I worked for ADB for 3 years traveling thru out Asia for their annual reports after the Times was closed by Marcos.Just send me Q and A sort of interview and I can tell you on about the Times. So till then. E NIevera |

Just visited the site Sassy Mae and its marvelous. You have done a great job. It would be helpful if you had a guestbook so others could comment and contribute information so that site continues to build up. I will be in Manila on the seventh to stay until mid-October. I will be staying with Sylvia should you need some other info. Congratulations and more power to you. Ding |

The inclusion of Philippine Star would make more sense if you had included the fact that Antonio "tony" Roces was one of the founders, and its initial president and editor-in-chief . Further that Alejandro "Anding" Roces is currently its columnist. |

Dear Sassy, I checked the web site and I think it looks better now. I also visited my piece of the site and found out you failed to edit my "wanna's"(1) and my "gonna's"(3). How about changing them soon? I also saw my little video clip. Its cool but just between us...I hope no one gets curious enough to click on that one. I look better in the photo. You're doing a good job. I think your hard work will be well rewarded. Thanks, Cookie |
